What would cause the brakes and power steering to stop working at the same time ? The fluid levels are OK, in the master cylinder and P/S pump. If I jack up the front end, start the 7.3 engine, the steering wheel turns fine. But if I apply pressure to the brake pedal, the steering wheel turns real hard. thats actually normal to a point on those trucks, due to the hydro boost sytem. the brake booster is run off the power steering pump. however, their are a couple possibilites here: one, the power steering pump is weak. two, the hydro boost on the master cylinder is leaking internally and you are losing pressure to the system. Some Ford trucks ran hydraulic boost for the brakes ( instead of vacuum) . The brakes and P/S ran off the same pump. If your still having problems by now. Which i hope your not. But, contact the dealer and let them know. but most of the time that doesn't work out so well. so, contact me back if you have problems still and well figure this out. Lastly I will add this. The system works off hydro boost and is controlled by the power steering pump. If the fluid is super brown. you need to change it. ONLY USE AFT FLUID in the power streering pump. The same fluid that your transmission calls for Mercon. Try changing the fluid out. Mobil 1 syn atf (expensive) but that should clear it up. Your pump may be going south. The process is as simple as unplugging the dead one and pushing in the new one. Regardless of which relay needs to be replaced, the process is the same for all. The relay box is located under the hood in the Caravan's engine compartment. Looking at the passenger side of the engine compartment you will see a covered box toward the front of the wheel well, and that is where the relays are located. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Metric wrench set Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a wrench to loosen the cable clamp's retainer bolt. 2 Remove the cover from the relay box by unsnapping it and pulling it open. Locate the relay that you wish to replace. All relays have labels as to their function, and a diagram may be on the relay box itself, or on the lid. 3 Remove the relay that you wish to replace by grasping it firmly and pulling it straight out of the box. Put the new relay in place and push it straight in firmly so that it seats itself flush. 4 Replace the cover on the relay box and reconnect the negative battery cable clamp on the battery post. Also look in the fuse compartments, both inside the vehicle and under the hood. Once you find it, you need to know the pin numbers for the coil and the contacts. Some relays have the information printed on the case. You also need to know how to operate a multimeter. Don't try to start the vehicle; without the relay, fuel can't get pumped to the engine. 2 Set your multimeter up to read DC volts at a scale above 12 volts. 3 Touch one of your multimeter leads to the chassis of the vehicle and the other to the pin on the relay socket where the voltage is applied to the coil. You should read 12 volts on the meter. If not, the circuit that controls the relay is bad. 4 Move the meter probe to the pin where the voltage comes in to the relay to power the fuel pump. This is usually called the "common" or "C" pin. You should also read 12 volts on that contact. If not, you have bad wiring or a bad fuse.
